ROCK-A-BILLY WILL NEVER DIE

The Santa Barbara Independent

Santa Barbara was in for a special musical treat this past Saturday when Borders featured one of the best rockabilly bands in the land. Although based in Arizona, the Cadillac Angels hail from Santa Barbara and have left their mark on the music scene since the early ’80s. The band, formally known as the Roadhouse Rockers with front man and creative genius Tony Balbinot, energized State Street with a kind of music that has managed to survive 50 years of semi-obscurity and a few bursts of popularity.

Rockabilly bands are hard to find these days, especially here in Santa Barbara; gone are the days of the "Rockabilly Round Ups" to benefit CALM. Over the years, Balbinot had managed to bring headliners such as ,Carl Perkins, Rosie Flores, Wanda Jackson, and Ronnie Dawson, and bands such as The Blazers, Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs, Big Sandy and The Fly Right Trio, James Intvelt, and many others to Santa Barbara.

For those of us who are rockabilly starved and who could not make it to Cold Spring Tavern on Sunday, the Cadillac Angels’ downtown gig was a welcome infusion of toe-tapping rhythm and finger-snapping twang. We are grateful to Borders for inviting them to play, and we are grateful to Balbinot for his contribution to a music genre that is purely American in its roots—a genre without which famous bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many other solo performers would have had to look elsewhere for inspiration in their pre-fame years.

Tony Balbinot and his band the Cadillac Angels promote their 15th studio album, Two Blocks Off Main, with a Nov. 15 show at Frog and Peach. Fifteen’s the charm for Cadillac Angels. The roots, rockabilly, and surf-rock outfit recently released Two Blocks Off Main, their 15th recording! It seems as though all frontman Tony Balbinot does is tour relentlessly and write and record music. On this new one, he delivers swampy guitar-driven burners that conjure memories of early Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Link Wray, and Eddie Cochran. Check ‘em out on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Frog and Peach.
